Being silent
was a survival technique,
closed eyes and lips unsmiling.
Disappearing i,
safe in hiding,
living in shade, a half-life.
Because the light is where they find you,
take what’s you and yours,
until there is no more.
Vagabond world,
leave no traces,
in a translucent suit of normal.
in an anonymous hue,
a permanent camouflage.
But an unloved life isn’t worth living.
Stepping through the disguise,
into the visible,
is choosing life.
You make a choice,
and the world accepts your radiance.
Better to live in truthful sorrow,
for even a bright, brief, miraculous flower,
than to live a thousand lifetimes mute.
