I couldn’t stop writing this post. It’s really 3 related posts in 1 long article. I was first inspired to write about Joy Behar wearing blackface then I started thinking about cultural appropriation and the trans-racial identity and how I think it relates to the white savior illusion.
“Definition of blackface
: dark makeup worn (as by a performer in a minstrel show) in a caricature of the appearance of a black person also : a performer wearing such makeup
NOTE: The wearing of blackface by white performers was, from the early 19th through the mid-20th centuries, a prominent feature of minstrel shows and similar forms of entertainment featuring exaggerated and inaccurate caricatures of black people. Its modern occurrence in imitation of such performers is considered deeply offensive.https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/blackface
Joy Behar is a prime example of subtle racism, she proudly shared a photo of herself in blackface, (which she claimed was an homage). How generous of her to uplift black women by pretending to be a “beautiful African woman” for Halloween. Cringe, gag, ew.
Racial identity isn’t a costume. Racial identity isn’t a mask to put on or remove. Physical features are not props to caricature. What is the true point of blackface, yellow face or white face? It’s a way to denigrate, mock, alienate and label people of a different race than you. Blackface comes from ignorance, whether it’s conscious or unconscious.
Blackface, Yellowface, Whiteface, Redface (sounds like a misguided Dr. Seuss book), Here are a few more examples:
Joy Behar viewed her racial objectification as a compliment, but it was an insult to black women. What she did was similar to the use of the word, “exotic” which was often used to describe people of color (especially women) as foreign, sex-objects. When I was a young woman I was described as “exotic” by creepy, ignorant men, believe me, it’s not flattering.
“Is this Joy speaking?” Ms. Klacik, who is running for the U.S. House seat formerly held by the late Elijah Cummings of Baltimore, replied. “The same Joy that paraded around in Blackface not too long ago? Come on, Joy.” Klacik added.
“Excuse me!” the comedian exclaimed. “The Black community had my back! They know that that was not Blackface! That was an homage. Oh, please! Just answer the question.”https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2020/sep/18/joy-behar-triggered-after-kim-klacik-calls-out-bla/
I don’t understand the new trend of “trans-racial” identity. Whatever the stated intention, mimicking racial and cultural stereotypes of what black people look like or how they’re perceived to behave, reinforces racism itself.
Krug confessed to being white only after being found out. Her apology is full of rhetoric about “Blackness” whatever that means. She’s a typical liberal professor, or was. She’s no longer teaching after being outed and cancelled.
“To an escalating degree over my adult life, I have eschewed my lived experience as a white Jewish child in suburban Kansas City under various assumed identities within a Blackness that I had no right to claim: first North African Blackness, then US rooted Blackness, then Caribbean rooted Bronx Blackness,” she went on.https://swarajyamag.com/insta/jessica-krug-a-white-professor-who-race-faked-herself-as-black-barred-from-teaching-at-george-washington-university
“Satchuel Cole, an Indianapolis racial justice activist, apologized on Wednesday for misrepresenting her racial identity.
“Friends, I need to take accountability for my actions and the harm that I have done. My deception and lies have hurt those I care most about. I have taken up space as a Black person while knowing I am white,” Cole wrote on Facebook.https://dailycaller.com/2020/09/20/list-white-liberals-lying-about-being-black-satchuel-cole-rachel-dolezal-jessica-krug/
What is it about these folks that would make them reject their own race? I think it’s the ultimate sign of privilege for a white person to pretend to be a person of color. Mimicry isn’t necessarily a form of flattery, I think the underlining objective is to join the “victim” group vs being part of the “oppressors” in order to escape “white guilt”.
Three more infamous white people who say they’re black:
1) Rachel Dolezal:
In my opinion, Rachel Dolezal is the epitome of white privilege, white guilt, cultural appropriation and the White Savior Myth. Identifying with a cause doesn’t mean that you have to reject who you actually are. We are born into our families, there’s nothing to feel guilty about, unless you consciously practice racism.
In this day and age, being born into wealth is the deciding factor of privilege, whatever your racial background. If you have privilege, then I think you should use it to promote and empower marginalized people. It’s not that complicated. I chose to fight racism by spreading information but I don’t speak for black people, because that’s not my right. I choose instead to highlight the platforms of black people that I admire by sharing their videos and articles so they can speak their message for themselves. The virtue signaling of celebrities and corporations are an obvious ploy, that’s why their message is being laughed at or ignored.
Youtubers are getting very creative, in this clip below, you get both information about Dolezal and a visual makeup tutorial. The following clip is a good summary of the Dolezal scam:
2) Shaun King:
Shaun King said that he’s bi-racial but his birth certificate says that he’s white. I think he resembles both his parents and his brother.
I initially followed him on Facebook in 2016 (I’m an ex-liberal and ex-Facebook user), all of his posts were about racism and violence against black people. I assumed he was black, but it didn’t matter to me what his racial heritage was. I didn’t think that racial identity was a requirement for activism, but my view has shifted slightly. Now I believe that black activists should be the leaders of their own causes.
Life is so bizarre. Reality seems distorted nowadays. The death row inmate, Christopher Viala in the clip below, coincidentally looked a bit like Shaun King to me and he was allegedly a white man that claimed to be black also. The ACLU tried to have him taken off death row because he was 19 when he committed the murders of two people, but he was executed a few weeks ago. He and his gang brutally kidnapped and killed a couple after asking them for a ride. The couple had just left church, sadly their trusting nature led to their death.
“After stealing their money, jewelry and ATM card, the teens locked the Bagleys in the trunk of their car as they drove around for hours trying to withdraw money from ATMs and seeking to pawn Stacie Bagley’s wedding ring. The Bagleys pleaded for their lives from the trunk.
The teens eventually pulled to the side of the road and poured lighter fluid inside the car. As they did, the Bagleys sang “Jesus loves us” in the trunk. Vialva, the oldest of the group, donned a ski mask, opened the trunk and shot the Bagleys in the head. Stacie Bagley, prosecutors said at trial, was still alive as flames engulfed the car.”
3) Martina Big
“If you give birth to a white child will you somehow think it’s not connected to you?’
No,’ Martina replied. ‘It’s a mix of Michael and me. I’m pretty sure it will be black or milk chocolate or a little bit light, it doesn’t matter.’”https://evoke.ie/2019/01/21/life-style/white-woman-thinks-she-is-black
The White Savior Myth:
I’m so tired of the White Savior Myth that seems to pervade all POC issues. We don’t need to be rescued by an outside force, we can help ourselves. I think it’s another form of white supremacy to step in and play the hero that rescues the poor, helpless minorities. If you want to help a cause then Stay in Your Lane.
I think White guilt/white savior mythology is a propaganda technique. It’s racist and condescending. I disagree with the phrase, white silence is violence; respectful silence in the form of listening to black voices and promoting their distinct message is an authentic way to be an ally without stealing the bullhorn and upstaging black people. I believe the voices of minority causes should come from an authentic source. I feel this way about all causes. Why? Because each group has a right to champion their own identity and win their own fights. Minority groups don’t need white, “big brother” charity.
I think White Savior activists are often racists in disguise. They need to stop pretending to know what it is to be Black or Latino or Asian. They need to step back and be quiet. Stop pandering, stop preaching, stop virtue signaling…just stop. Growing up among minority groups or studying racial theory books in college doesn’t mean that you inherently understand an issue, culture or the authentic experience. Textbooks are based on theories, and theories are ideas that haven’t necessarily been proven. Unless you’ve directly lived through the actual discrimination, you only have a second hand, limited and passive comprehension.
White privilege/guilt has manifested in strange and dangerous ways and I think it’s because the activist/rioters are out of touch with reality. Many Antifa/BLM rioters look like they’ve lived in affluent neighborhoods for all of their sheltered lives; but think they’re now rescuing the world through violence and anarchy.
What especially bothers me is the white BLM protesters that shout racist insults at specifically black and POC officers. One particular racist BLM/Antifa rioter taunted a black officer by asking him why his nose was so big. Their tactics are disgusting and hateful.
“”They don’t even know that the tactics that they are using are the same tactics that were used against my people,” he said.
“They don’t know history, they don’t know what they are saying.”https://www.wnd.com/2020/07/4837718/
Writers are often taught to write about what they know/what they’ve experienced and I think that common sense advice to stay within a boundary of authenticity should apply to activists as well. It makes me disgusted to see white BLM activists shouting racist insults at black police officers, and getting away with it under the guise of social justice. They should be wearing white KKK robes, that’s what they’re actually supporting.
“Look at his lazy eye. Left eye lazy as hell,” a protester said to a black cop, unleashing a string of belittling remarks.
“One of these real n*****s took it to your head, didn’t they? One of these real n*****s out here took it to you, didn’t they?” he said, taunting the officer. “Knocked that left eye sideways, didn’t they? Fucked you the fuck up.”https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/09/03/watch-blm-protester-to-hispanic-female-cop-the-joke-is-your-fking-hispanic-ass-being-in-that-fking-uniform/
